MARIA JIMENEZ

PAFA 2015 - 2017

Maria Jimenez’s body of work examines the pervasive influence of smartphones, laptops, and social media on contemporary life, with particular attention to younger generations. Drawing on my dual perspective as an artist and a high school art teacher, I witness firsthand how constant connectivity shapes how Generation Z and Generation Alpha think, communicate, and relate to one another. Mobile devices have become extensions of identity, blurring the boundaries between online and offline selves. This work reflects on the addictive nature of digital culture and its impact on attention, learning, and personal development, concerns that extend beyond youth to affect adults as well. Through these pieces, I invite viewers to consider their own relationship to the screen and the quiet consequences of living perpetually connected.

Maria Jimenez is a contemporary representational artist born and raised in New York City. Her artistic journey began at the School of Visual Arts, where she earned her undergraduate degree and launched her career as a freelance illustrator specializing in trade and mass-market paperback covers. Her passion for fine arts led her to further her studies at atelier institutions such as the New York Academy and the National Academy, where she honed her skills in classical techniques. In 2017, Maria completed her MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Since then, her work has gained national recognition, appearing in exhibitions and juried competitions at notable venues, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Gallery, the Museum of American Illustration, Fine Art Connoisseur, and the RJD Gallery. Her talents have earned her the Richard Amsel Memorial Award and a grant from The Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation.
